Wuthering Waves Skills & Combat
Every character in Wuthering Waves has five ability types. Understanding how they work โ and how they chain together โ is the difference between clearing content and struggling through it.
โ๏ธ The 5 Ability Types
Every Resonator has exactly five abilities. They always appear in this order on each character detail page โ:
โ Basic Attack
Your bread-and-butter damage. Usually a 4-5 hit combo. Heavy Attack variant consumes stamina for a charged hit. Mid-air attack for plunging damage. This is what you do between skill cooldowns.
โก Resonance Skill
Your primary active ability. Short cooldown (8-15s). Generates Concerto Energy on hit. Often enters an enhanced state or provides a buff. This is the skill you spam most often.
โข Resonance Liberation
Your ultimate. Long cooldown (20-30s), high Energy cost (100-150). Deals massive damage in a large area. Always generates significant Concerto Energy. Use it as the climax of your damage rotation.
โฃ Forte Circuit
Your character's unique mechanic. Every Resonator's Forte works differently โ Jinhsi builds Incandescence stacks, Camellya accumulates Thorns for a special blooming strike. Read this carefully for your Main DPS.
โค Outro Skill
Triggers when you swap this character out with full Concerto. Usually applies a team-wide buff or deals parting damage. Rotating to trigger the right Outro buff is the core of team building.
๐ Concerto Energy
Concerto is the invisible resource that governs team rotations. Every attack and skill generates Concerto. When a character's Concerto gauge fills completely, swapping them out triggers both their Outro Skill and the incoming character's Intro Skill simultaneously.
Key facts:
- Resonance Skills generate the most Concerto โ typically 8-15 per cast. Basic attacks generate small amounts per hit.
- Resonance Liberation instantly generates 20-30 Concerto โ one Liberation often fills the gauge by itself.
- Support characters build Concerto fastest โ their skills are designed to fill the gauge quickly so you can swap back to your DPS. Verina and Shorekeeper can fill theirs in 3-4 seconds.
- You can see Concerto as a glowing circle around the character icon in the top-right HUD during combat.
๐ Intro & Outro Skills
Intro and Outro skills are what make team composition matter. They're not just damage โ they're your primary source of team-wide buffs.
- Outro Skill: the outgoing character's parting gift. Examples: Shorekeeper's Outro gives +23% Spectro DMG for 14s; Verina's Outro buffs the entire team's ATK; Mortefi's Outro buffs Heavy Attack DMG for Jiyan.
- Intro Skill: the incoming character's entrance. Often deals damage and applies an element-specific debuff or self-buff. Intro Skill damage is usually modest โ the real value is the Outro buff it carries.
- Swapping without full Concerto still works โ it just doesn't trigger Intro/Outro. You can quick-swap to dodge or reposition, but you lose the buff chain.
๐จ Dodge Counter & Parry
Wuthering Waves rewards mechanical skill. Two techniques separate good players from great ones:
- Dodge Counter: dodge at the exact moment an enemy attacks and you'll trigger a special counter-attack. The timing window is generous (roughly 0.3s), and the counter deals significantly more damage than a normal dodge. Dodge Counters also generate extra Concerto Energy.
- Parry (Clash): certain enemy attacks glow with a golden circle โ these can be parried by attacking into them. A successful parry staggers the enemy briefly, opening a damage window. Bosses often have 2-3 parryable attacks per cycle.
- Stamina management: dodging costs stamina. If you run out, you can't dodge. Don't spam dodge โ time them. Characters with high combat uptime benefit from stamina food or Echo substats that reduce dodge cost.
๐ Elements & Combat Roles
Wuthering Waves has six elements. Each character deals damage of their element type. Matching two characters of the same element provides an elemental resonance bonus.
